Why the Legal Profession? A Brief Overview
There are three main reasons why the law is my career choice. I've had many professors and industry leaders tell me that the law is no thing to be unsure about and it requires a lifelong dedication many can't handle. This partially gives way to why this career is one of the highest in suicide rates. However, I am ready to take on the challenge. Firstly, since a young boy I have always enjoyed competitive, logical arguments where the person with the most knowledge of a certain topic prevails. Secondly, the law gives voice to those who are voiceless and powerless when pitted against multinational corporations. Lastly, I had always struggled with teacher-student relationships throughout my early schooling; understanding the why behind rules immensely helped me in my personal life.
Further Explanation
Competitive Arguments
I have always been known for having a knack of persuading others effectively. Being able to go toe-to-toe with the world's smartest minds in a verbal battle is something that excites my competitive juices in a way that no other activity does. I'm a highly competitive person and when given the opportunity to compete with top lawyers, I will certainly give it my all.
Voice to the Powerless
So many Americans are subject to situations that are unfair, cruel, and flat-out wrong. However, many Americans do not have nearly as much resources or necessary knowledge to truly tackle these issues. It was not Congress or the Executive branch that solved segregation, it was willing and able lawyers. Nearly every social justice issue tackled in this country has been led by the efforts of high-level lawyers and I hope to join that group of people in the near future.
Rules
From middle school until my freshman year of high school I was constantly bickering with teachers and landing myself in trivial trouble. However, my sophomore year I was able to have a heart-to-heart with a teacher who finally began to explain some of the rules to me such as a dress code. I was able to understand the reasoning as to why we were supposed to behave a certain way. I began to inquire more into the reasoning behind certain rules and this greatly helped me follow them. Furthermore, as I began to deeply understand the role and perspective of teachers my relationships with them greatly improved. Obviously we had contrasting desires, but with a better understanding of the 'opposing' side, I was able to more amicably work out compromises. This same principle greatly inspires my love for the law. While certainly there is much to understand and learn, simply knowing there is a why to all of the laws helps me greatly. Even if I don't agree, I can better make my case and tackle the original notions that inform decisions in the law.
